Chapter 8 Flashcards
What is a synthesis reaction?
A + X -> AX
A reaction in which two or more substances combine to form a new compound
What are the types of reactions?
Single replacement Double replacement Combustion Synthesis Decomposition
What is a Decomposition reaction?
AX -> A + X
A reaction where a single compound breaks down to form 2 or more simpler elements
What is a Combustion reaction?
A substance combines with Oxygen, releasing energy In the form of heat and light
What is a Double Replacement Reaction?
AX + BY-> AY + BX
Ions of 2 compounds exchange places in an aqueous solution to form 2 new compounds.
What is a Single replacement reaction?
A + BX -> AX + B
One element replaces a similar element in a compound
What is an activity series?
A series of elements that have similar properties and that are arranged in descending order of chemical activity.
