Chapter 8 Flashcards
What are the types of genetic crosses?
Monohybrid cross - cross involving a single trait. Dihybrid cross - cross involving two traits
Define heredity.
The passing of characters from the parents to offspring
Define Alleles.
Two forms of a gene (dominant and recessive).
Define Dominant & Recessive.
D- the gene that shows up most and is represented by a Capitol letter.
R- shows up less and is lower case.
Who was Gregor Mendel known for?
“the father of genetics” because he was the first to discover and understand it.
Define Genotype.
the genetic make up ; gene combination for two genes for parents. (Rr, RR, Rr)
Define phenotype.
The physical appearance from genotype. (RR)
2 of the same types of genes involving 2 dominant or 2 recessive also called pure is called?
Homozygous .
Gene combination of one dominant and one recessive gene (Rr) also called hybrid is called?
Heterozygous.
What is gene therapy?
When the defective genes get replaced with copies of healthy ones in certain genetic disorders.
What are 3 types of genetic disorders?
Sickle Cell Anemia, Cystic Fibrosis & Hemophilia
What is the law of segregation?
the two alleles for a character separates when gametes are formed.
Define the law of independent assortment.
the alleles of different genes seperate independently of one another during gamete formation.
Where is a sex-linked gene located?
X and Y chromosomes
