Chapter 8 Flashcards
Metabolism and growth

J. Allen Hynek concluded that “UFO” sightings were swamp gas or methane
What is metabolism
Sum total of our energy budget
Exergonic reaction
Reactions that produce an excess of energy when a biological molecule is digested. Can be lost as heat or light. The bonds of the larger molecule have more collective energy than all the smaller substances that remain.
Endergonic
Reactions that require an input of energy
Pyrosome
Glow due to bacteria in their tissue. Exergonic reaction. The light can attract food.
Coupled reaction
Exergonic and Endergonic reactions occur simultaneously. Exergonic reaction provides energy for the subsequent reaction.
ATP components
Ribose sugar covalently bonded to adenine and three phosphate groups. The phosphates provide the large amount of energy in the molecule when they are removed (availability for use in endergonic processes)
ADP
Adenosine diphosphate. 2 phosphate molecules on adenine. An exergonic reaction occurs W hen a phosphate group is removed to convert ATP to ADP
Why is ATP so energy rich?
Phosphate group is negatively charged. The three “tails” strongly repel each other. Bonds are unstable.
Oxidized
An atom losing an electron
