Chapter 8 Flashcards
Classification of alcohols
Alcohol are Either
PRIMARY (1°),
SECONDARY (2°)
TERTIARY (3°)
Also known as grain alcohol
Ethanol
Is used as the fuel additive gasohol , the alcohol in alcoholic beverages, and an important laboratory and industrial solvents
Ethanol
Is used both as solvents and as a starting material for production of formaldehyde and acetic acid.
Methanol
Methanol came from the word wood in the absence of air (destructive destillations)
Wood alcohol
Is used as radiator antifreeze and as a solvents
Denatured alcohol
A complicated looking steroid alcohol, has been implicated as a causitive agent in heart disease
Cholesterol
Is a biologically important polyunsaturated alcohol
Vitamin A
Are used as local anesthetics
Benzyl alcohol and o- hydroxybenzyl alcohol
Many alcohol have distinctive odors and flavors and are found naturally in fruits and flowers.
Ilang- ilang and jasmine oil
Are used commercially in the manufacture of polymers, especially the polyesters.
Diols such as ethylene glycol and propylene glycol
Is used extensively as a wetting agent (a substance that absorbs moisture) and in preparation of toothpaste
Glycerol
Small amount of low weight are added to natural gas to serve as an easily detectable warning in case of leaks.
Thiols
Are biochemically important because they are oxidized with mild reagent to disulfides which are found in insulin and proteins
Thiols
(o-,m-, p-cresol) are found in coal tar. Serve as important intermidediates in the industrial synthesis of products as diverse as adhesive and antiseptic
Phenol and cresols
