Chapter 3 Alkyl Halides Flashcards
Have the general formula R-X
Alkyl halides
Carbon atoms are classified as
Primary (1°)
Secondary(2°)
Tertiary (3°)
R in alkyl halide is
Substituted alkyl group
are named similar to the rules of alkanes with extension
Alkyl halides
Manufactured under the trade name freons are the most widely known haloalkanes. It’s non toxic, non flammable, odorless, and non corrosive.
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s)
Are trihalogen derivatives of methane.
Haloform
Is a heavy colorless liquid which a sweet ethereal odor and sweet taste , insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvent
Trichloromethane
Is a yellow solid with a characteristic medical or antiseptic odor, insoluble in water but soluble in in organic solvents. It is used in medicine as surgical dusting powder ( antiseptic) and disinfectant for wounds.
Triiodomethane
Used as a laboratory reagent
Tribromomethane
Today used haloalkanes solvents is dichloromethane
Tetrachloromethane
Are used as plastics
Halogenerated polymers
Used in mainly in making silicon polymer
Methyl chloride
Has been used to control the spread of the Asian long horned beetle to the united States
Bromomethane
produced by giant kelp and algae and also found in emission from volcanoes
Chloromethane
Serves as a topical Colling agent. Athletes use to it to temporarily numb the pain from a bruise . Phisicians apply it before performing minor surgery
Chloroethane (ethyl chloride)
