Culture
• Culture is a complex concept
– That is defined slightly differently by different disciplines.
• It is generally defined as
– A pattern of behaviors that includes customs, beliefs, and values
Spirituality and Religion
• Spirituality and religion are sometimes confused
– But they are separate terms that refer to related, concepts
• A serviceable definition of spirituality is
– That which gives meaning to one’s life and draws one to transcend oneself
• It is essential to be aware of these influences and to critically examine
– How they influence our reactions to grieving practices and mourning rituals of others
Demonstrating Cultural Sensitivity
• One of the most practical and efficient ways to demonstrate cultural sensitivity
– Is to ask about cultural beliefs/practices when discussing loss with an individual or a family
• This is particularly important
– When it comes to mourning practices and burial and memorial rituals.
Cultural Norms and Expectations
- Expressing feelings & behaviors following a loss- influenced by culture
- These expectations may be different for men and women, or for adults and children
- Failure to be aware/respect expectations
– And intervene can result in failure to engage the grieving client
Cultural Norms and Messages
• Cultural messages are transmitted in many ways
– Not only through direct family communication or interaction
• The mass media in America has a tremendous influence on our ideas
– About how to react in the face of loss
The Influence of Media
• The way the popular media commonly focuses on violent death in the news,
– In movies, and in television programs generally omits presentation of the long-term
– Effects on survivors & contributes to what some experts refer to as grief denying culture
The Influence of Spirituality
- Spiritual beliefs & practices are also very significant when it comes to mourning
- The beliefs, values and practices related to death are often significantly influenced
– By spiritual or religious orientations
• Our spiritual or religious beliefs most likely influenced our views & mourning rituals
Attending to Non-verbal Signals
• It is important to attend to verbal and nonverbal signals that might indicate
– The importance of religion or spirituality for individuals or families
– The presence of religious or spiritual articles
• Such as clothing, medals, or books might indicate they are a resource to be drawn upon
Referring to a Spiritual Resource
• When concern about religion or spirituality is expressed by someone facing loss
– There may be a need for further exploration or referral to a spiritual resource
• What spiritual resources might you refer to in your practice?

• Helping professionals in a variety of disciplines have reported that
– Their own spirituality helps them to cope with their work
