Chapter 7- Weathering Flashcards
Weathering
the physical and chemical processes that alter rocks and minerals at the Earths surface
Physical Weathering
Causes fragmentation of rock. Is aided by rock joints and other types of fractures
Chemical Weathering
decomposition of minerals in rock.
Soil
Unconsolidated mineral and organic material constituting the uppermost layer on Earth’s surface.
Dissolution
Carbonic acid dissolves the mineral calcite, separation of materials into a solution by a solvent, such as water or acid
Erosion
is the transportation of the weathered material
Hydrolysis
(cation exchange) of a compound with acidic water cations and their use by free oxygen. Rocks turn red
Oxidation
loss of electrons by cations and their use by free oxygen. Rocks turn red
