Chapter 6- Volcanoes Flashcards
Caldera
Spanish for caldron large usually circular depressions that may be several kilometers wide, indicating that huge magma chambers are associated with the eruptions
Shield volcano
Large volume, gentle, low angle slopes. Filled with Basaltic low silica magma. Set on mid plate or convergent boundary. EX: Mauna Loa Volcano, Hawaii
Flood Basalt
So much lava has issued from the ground that it is referred to as flood basalt
Lava
A type of magma is fluid rock that comes from a vent or fissure
Magma
hot fluid or semifluid material below or within the earth’s crust from which lava and other igneous rock is formed by cooling.
Composite or Stratovolcano
Tall with steep slopes; often irregular outline from the past explosions and rugged dome areas. Filled with andesitic, silica-rich magma at subduction zone. Usually on a convergent boundary setting. Example: Mount Pinatubo, Mount St. Helens
