Chapter 7 - Ways To Study The Brain Flashcards
What is an MRI?
Type of ct scan that is static to look at 3d view of the brain
- X-rays passed though brain followed by radio waves, and then density of hydrogen atoms emitted off is measured to view the structure
What is diffusion tensor imaging?
A type of MRI procedure used to see the directional flow of water molecules in the brain to measure nerve pathways
- shows abnormalities in pathways as well as changes in myelination
What is an fmri?
A dynamic brain imaging imaging technique that is magnetic resonance where molecules such as iron and oxygen are measured during a specific behaviour
- this shows the blood flow during the behaviour and resting
Good spatial
Bad TENPORAL
Must lay in a tube
What is resting fmri?
Measures changes in blood flow when the participant is resting and told to focus on one object
What is a PET SCAN
Imaging techniques that detects the changes in blood flow by measuring changes in the uptake of compounds such as glucose and oxygen
- used to study metabolic activity of brain
What is a ct?
It is a static imaging technoque used to view the structure of the brain as well as injuries in the brain
- it is done by x-Rays going trough the head at mans different angles and then a scanning software translates it into a 3d image
- noninvasive
