Chapter 7 VCE Biology Flashcards
What are the biological levels of the environment?
Individual –> Population –> Community –> Ecosystem –> Biome –> Biosphere
What does habitat mean?
The type of place where an organism lives. Different habitats will support different species.
What is a microhabitat?
An area within a habitat. This could be a burrow, a tree canopy or even inside other organisms.
What is an Ecological Niche?
An organism’s ecological niche is its role in its environment. This includes how the organism uses its resources and interacts with other species and its environment.
What does the competitive exclusion principle state and what does it mean?
This principle states that two species cannot have the same niche in an ecosystem. This means that two species cannot use the same resource in the same space at the same time.
What is a community?
A community is an ecological grouping of different species that live together in a particular place at a particular time and interact with one another.
What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem is a system formed by a community of living organisms interacting with one another in a particular place at a particular time, together with their physical surroundings.
What is a biosphere?
A biosphere is the sum of all the ecosystems on Earth.
What is interspecific competition?
Interspecific competition is a struggle between organisms of different species for the same supply of food. water, space, nest sites or any other environmental resource that is limited in supply.
