Chapter 6 VCE Biology Flashcards
Define Species?
A group of organisms that resemble each other more than they resemble members of other groups.
How can you tell is an organism is in the same species.
1) Morphological Features
2) DNA (number of chromosomes)
What is biological species?
Individuals that can breed among themselves and produce fertile offspring
What is the Linnaean System?
It is the grouping of organisms in a hierarchy.
What is the order of the Linnaean System?
Domain –> Kingdom –> Phylum –> Class –> Order –> Family –> Genus –> Species
What are the five kingdoms?
1) Animalia
2) Plantae
3) Protista
4) Fungi
5) Monera
What are the three domains?
1) Bacteria
2) Archaea
3) Eukarya
Why is it important to manage biodiversity?
It is essential to manage biodiversity because it is a reservoir for bioprospecting new food sources and medicinal drugs.
List the type of values possessed by a species that warrant its conservation?
1) Aesthetic Value
2) Ecological Value
3) Economical and Practical Value
What is a phylogenetic tree?
A phylogenetic tree shows which organisms are closely related to each other and which organism had evolved from another.
What are the strategies of managing earth’s biodiversity?
1) In situ
2) Ex situ
3) Establishing protected areas
4) Prevention and control of invasive species
5) Reducing Pollution
What is In situ?
In situ is a strategy of conserving an organism by leaving in its natural environment but eliminating factors that may harm the organism. This may be eliminating alien species and managing protected areas.
What is Ex situ?
Ex situ is a strategy of conserving an organism by removing it from its natural environment and breeding it in captivity. This involves legally protecting endangered species, managing the habitat then reintroducing them into it.
Methods for controlling invasive species
1) Prevention: The Australian Quarantine Inspection service prevents unwanted species entering the country
2) Control: herbicides, insecticides and a biological control is used to control unwanted species.
What is a biological control?
A biological control is when a predator is introduced to kill unwanted species. However, we must be cautious that the predator does not kill other species.
