Chapter 7: Telecommunications, the Internet and Wireless Technology Flashcards
Networks consist of
2 or more connected computers
Basic network components include
- computers
- network interfaces
- a connection medium
- network operating system software
- either a hub or a switch
convergence
telephone networks and computer networks converging into single digital network using Internet standards
Broadband
Broadband or high-speed Internet access allows users to access the Internet and Internet-related services
broadband wireless
a high-speed internet and data service delivered through a wireless local area network (WLAN) or wireless wide area network (WWAN)
Corporate Networking structure
collection of many different networks from the public switched telephone network, to the Intranet, to corporate local area networks linking workgroups, departments, or office floors
- all kinds of netwrosk combined (public and private)
Client/server computing
In client-server computing, a centralized communications model, the server is the central node that communicates with other client nodes
- server sets rules of communication for network and provides every client with an address so others can find it on the network
Packet switching
- makes more efficient use of network’s communications capacity
- method of slicing digital messages into parcels, sending them along different communication paths
Protocols
provide a common set of rules that enable communication among diverse components in a telecommunications network
Physical transmission media mostly through
twisted copper telephone Wire, coaxial copper cable, fiber-optic cable, and wireless transmission
Local area networks (LANs)
connect PCs and other digital devices within a 500-meter radius (often used for corporate computing tasks)
Wide area networks (WANs)
span broad geographical distances, ranging from several miles to entire continents, private and independently managed networks
Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs)
span a single urban area
Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)
technologies, cable Internet connections, and TI lines are often used for high-capacity Internet connections
Internet is a worldwide network of networks that uses
the client/server model of computing and the TCP/IP network reference model
