Chapter 7 Sleep & Dreams Flashcards
Electroencephalogram
Records brain wave activity
Circadian Rhythm
Consistent pattern of cynical body activities, usually lasting 24 to 25 hours
Determined by an internal biological clock
Can be adjusted by exposure to light
REM Sleep
Stage of sleep Rapid eye movement Originally termed paradoxical sleep because it's EEG pattern resembles awake person 20-25% of sleep time Dreaming
Stage 1 Sleep
First stage after falling asleep
Looks like theta waves (3-7cps) on EEG
Stage 2 sleep
•stage of NREM sleep that is characterized by bursts of high-amplitude sleep spindles (12-16 cps) in the EEG
Stages 3 & 4 Sleep
•stage of NREM sleep that shows high-amplitude delta waves (1-2 cps) in the EEG
Conservation Functioning
•theory that states that sleep evolved as a way to save energy at times when there was no need to forage for food, search for mates, or work
Restoration Functioning
•theory that states that sleep provides a way to interrupt waking-induced damage to the brain and to undertake repair of brain cells
Insomnia
Sleep disorder characterized by the chronic inability to spend enough time in sleep (REM), or to get sufficient sleep
Narcolepsy
Sleep disorder characterized by an irresistible compulsion to sleep during the daytime.
Nightmare
- sleep disorder that is characterized by frequent frightening dreams that disrupt sleep
- sleep disorder that occurs in people who have experienced traumatic events and have repetitive bad dreams that force them to relive aspects of their trauma
