Nonconscious
NOT being aware of event or external environment
Something not available to consciousness or memory- ex. breathing
Conscious
Being aware of an internal event or something in the external environment
Mental activity- thoughts and feelings
Temporarily become conscious when you focus attention
Preconscious
Type of memory you are not currently conscious of but can easily call into consciousness when necessary
Hypnosis
Altered state of consciousness characterized by heightened responsiveness to suggestion
Makes people feel like their behavior is being controlled by someone else without their intention
Tolerance
Something that occurs with continued drug use in which an individual needs greater dose to achieve same effect
Same dose of drug no longer produces same level of effect after it’s used frequently
Physiological Dependence
Process of when the body becomes adjusted to and reliant upon a drug for a given effect
Due to tolerance- decreased levels of a neurotransmitter
State where addict requires drug to avoid suffering painful withdrawal symptoms.
Psychological dependence
The psychological need for a drug
Drug becomes so desirable or pleasurable that they develop a craving
Hallucinogen
Class of drug that alters perceptions of the external environment and inner awareness
Lead to loss of boundary between self and non self such as with LSD and PCP
Effects primarily by affecting serotonin receptors in the brain
Opiate
Class of drug that includes heroin, morphine, and painkillers such as Oxycotin
Effects by stimulating endorphin receptors in brain that have powerful effects on mood, pain and pleasure
Depressant
Class of drug that tends to slow down the mental and physical activity of the body by inhibiting or decreasing the transmission of nerve impulses in the CNS
Stimulant
Class of drug that causes increased self confidence, greater energy and hyper alertness and mood alterations approaching euphoria- meth and cocaine
Develop hallucinations and paranoid delusions: belief that others are out to harm them
