Chapter 7: Pest Management Flashcards
Integrated Pest Management
What is IPM?
Integrated Pest Management. Decision making process that aims to prevent pests from becoming problems, and to determine what actions to take if pests occur.
What are the 6 elements in IPM?
-Prevent organisms from becoming a problem
-Identifying pest and beneficial species
-Monitor pest populations, damages and environmental conditions
- Using injury and action thresholds
- treatments that combine methods (Phys, mechanical, behavior, chem, bio)
-Evaluating the effects and efficacy
What is Biological Pest Control?
Is an attempt to use natural enemies of those organisms that becomes pest.
Difference between Classical biological control and Inundative biological control?
Classical involves introduction of non native organisms. Inundative is introducing natural predators, parasites etc.
What is Cultural Control?
Manipulating the environment which makes it less favourable to the pests
What are some preventive measures with IPM?
using weed free seed. identifying pest problems early. Eliminating hosts for diseases. Using crop rotations. Time operations to avoid pest activity (seeding/ calving date)
What are some physical control measures?
Hand pulling weeds, trapping, mowing, early swathing, tillage, using livestock to graze weeds, rotational grazing to reduce weed problems.
Difference between foliar and soil applied herbicide?
Foliar - applied to existing vegetation and acts on leaves and stems. Can be contact or systemic.
Soil - applied to soil to control germinating seeds or growing plants. EX. Avadex, Focus.
