Chapter 7: particulate nature of matter Flashcards
What is the arrangement and motion of solids?
particles are VERY CLOSELY PACKED in an ORDERLY manner. they vibrate about their FIXED position. There is very little space between the particles for them to move closer. so it cannot be compressed. The particles are held together by VERY STRONG forces of ATTRACTION.
What is the arrangement of liquids?
Particles are CLOSELY PACKED in a DISORDERLY manner. they move RANDOMLY and slide past one another.
What is the arrangement of gas
The particles are FAR APART and are arranged in a DISORDERLY MANNER, they move RANDOMLY and QUICKLY.
What happens to the particles during heating and melting?
Spaces between particles increase during heating, decrease during cooling
What is the definition of diffusion?
The movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
