Chapter 3: Chemical composition Flashcards
What are elements?
They are the building blocks o matter that cannot be broken down into simpler substances
What are compounds?
Two or more elements that are chemically mixed together
What are properties of compounds?
- Different properties from the elements that it is made up of.
- Cannot be separated easily
What are mixtures?
Two or more elements or compounds that are physically combined together (no chemical reaction involved)
What are properties of mixtures?
Same or similar to their constituents
What are solutions? How can we make solutions?
Solute + solvent = solution, by dissolving a solute in a solvent
What are factors that affect rate of dissolving?
- size of solute particles
- temperature
- rate of stirring
What is solubility?
How well a solute can dissolve in a fixed volume of solvent
What affects solubility?
Affected by the type of solute/ solvent
What is a suspension?
Suspensions contains insoluble solids in a solvent
What is the difference between solutions and suspensions?
The solute is dissolved in the solvent in a solution but does not in a suspension.
