Feudal system

An old word for farmer.

A person who belonged to the Lord and farmed his land.

A man who paid rent and tax to the Lord but could travel as he pleased

Soldiers who rode into battle on horseback.

The land and everything on it owned by the Lord

The Kings followers

Serf’s 30 acres to farm

It was used to mean the land that a count got from the king
Tithe
A house that the priest lived in
Commons
Where the peasants lived
Bailiff
A person that kept law and order
Keep
Main building in the castle
Ramparts
Ran along the top of the walls. Wide enough for soldiers to walk along.
Moat
A ditch filled with water around the castle.
Latrines
Toilets of the castle.
Motte
A small hill
Bailey
A Big enclosure
Battlements
At the top of the keep, the soldier kept watch there
Curtain walls
Outer walls of the castle
Turret
Strong towers along the walls
Drawbridge
Was raised at night or if enemies attacked
Portcullis
An iron grille that could be lowered in front of the castle gates
Siege
A siege was when an enemy surrounded the walls of the castle and waited for the people inside to die.
Fair green
Where people went to be entertain
Toll
It was a tax that traders had to pay at the town gates
Curfew
It was a time when all fires had to be put out so the town won’t get on fire
Leporsy
It was a disease
Black Death
It was a disease caused from the fleas from black rats
Plague
A contagious disease
Charter
A document granted by the king that allowed people to own their own towns
Corporation
A large company or groups of people.
