Archaeologist
The person who discovers and studies the objects left behind from the past.
Archaeology
Study of what has been left behind by people from the past.
Artefact
Objects made by humans e.g weapons,coins,pottery.
Research archaeology
If there is an old document saying there is an artefact somewhere.
Rescue archaeology
They make sure no object from the past is left behind.
Bog body
Well preserved bodies known as bog bodies.
Mummy
The bodies of ancient Egyptian rulers.
Survey
Study carried out on a site before archaeologists start digging.
Test trench
A tunnel made to make sure there is something in the ground.
Aerial photograph
Is a x ray taken of the ground to make sure there is something there.
Dig
Is when people take pieces of the ground out to find something.
Trowel
Layers of earth are swiped away with a trowel.
Hand-pick
A hand-pick is used to loosen soil.
Brushes
Archaeologists use brushes to be careful not to break an object.
Sieve
The soil is put through a sieve to make sure nothing small is missed.
Hoard
A hoard is when people put gold or silver together for safekeeping but never retrieved.
Post-holes
Wooden poles are used for building houses and leave dark round patches called post-holes.
Stratigraphy
The deeper an object is, the more older it is.
Carbon dating
Is when archaeologist use carbon 14 to date an object that was once alive.
Dendrochronology
You can tell how old a tree is by looking at the rings inside the tree trunk.
