Chapter 7: Mental Imagery and Cognitive Maps Flashcards
Define imagery.
the mental representation of stimuli when those stimuli are not physically present in the environment
Define visual imagery.
the mental representation of visual stimuli, for example, visualizing your driving route to the grocery store
Define auditory imagery.
the mental representation of auditory stimuli, for example, when a melody is stuck in your head
What is the mental imagery debate?
The imagery debate is the controversy over whether our mental images resemble perception using an analog code or whether they resemble language using a propositional code. It is most likely that both the analog and propositional approaches are partially correct depending on the specific task.
What is analog code?
a representation that closely resembles the physical object
What is propositional code?
an abstract, language-like representation (i.e. storage is not visual or spatial) that does not physical resemble the original approach
