chapter 7: disease Flashcards
what is bacteria?
• single- celled microscopic organism
what is a pathogen?
• bad bacteria that causes disease
malnutrition, what is it?
• not having the right amount amount of nutrition which leads to the body not functioning properly
what are the two types of malnutrition?
• under nutrition: leads to diseases such as
- rickets - scurvy - kwashiorkor
• over nutrition: leads to
- diabetes - weight gain
what is a virus?
• a much smaller ( 1000 times) type of disease which can cause diseases
1st line of defence
- skin
- eyelashes
- hair
- saliva
- mucus
- vomiting/ diarrhoea
2nd line of defence
- damage cells
~ release a histamine (chemical that causes inflammation) - inflammation causes blood to rush to area
- white blood cell:
~ neutrophil (yellow puss = dead white blood cells)
~ macrophage (3rd line of defence)
how do vaccines work?
• insert a weakened or dead part of the Virus. This causes your body to make antibodies = you’re immune
infectious vs. contagious
infectious = can be passed by one person to another
contagious = more easily passed (air bourne etc.)
fungicides?
• chemical that kills fungi
is all bacteria bad?
• NO, we have a lot of bacteria that make up our body eg. in the digestive system
bad bacteria = pathogen
what’s fever? why is it a good thing?
• response to infection. it causes your body to increase to temperature.
good because temperature can kill/ effect pathogens
what’s a chronic disease?
• a disease that happens due to life style factors and gets worse over time eg. diabetes
diabetes, what causes it?
—> eating too much sugar = not getting the right nutrients or the right amount
macrophage
—> consume bacteria, is a white blood cell
