Caring
universal phenomenon influencing the ways in which people think, feel, and behave in relation to one another
Comforting
Acts toward another individual that display both an emotional and physical calm. The use of touch, establishing presence, the therapuetic use of silence, and the skillful and gentle performance of a procedure are examples of comforting nursing measures
Ethics of care
concerned with relationships between people and with a nurse’s character and attitude towards others
Presence
person to person encounter conveying a closeness and sense of caring
Transcultural
Concept of care extending across cultures that distinguishes nursing from other health disciplines
Transformative
relationship influences both the nurse and the patient for better or worse
Knowing
striving to understand an event as it has meaning in the life of the other
Being With
Being emotionally present to the other
Doing for
doing for the other as he or she would do for self if it were at all possible
Enabling
Facilitating the other’s passage through life transitions
Maintaining belief
Sustaining faith in the other’s capacity to get through an event or transition and face a future with meaning
