What is violence?
the threat of or actual use of physical force against oneself or another person
What is homicide?
the intentional killing of one person by another
What is a victim?
the person who is attacked
What is an assailant?
a person who attacked another person
What is a territorial gangs?
groups that are organized to control a specific neighborhood or “turf”
What are the three costs of violence and what does that mean?
costs of society: money, less taxes/ppl
costs of victim: depression, death, injuries
cost of assailants: jail, court fees, criminal charges
What are the 6 risk factors of violence and explain them?
family violence: abuse, norms growing up
poverty: steal $ to stay alive (stealing)
media: spread info, news, movies
availability of weapons: did because he could
drug abuse: crazy, violence, just getting drugs
gangs: drugs, $, guns
What is hate violence?
speech or behavior aimed at a person or group based on personal characteristics
What is hazing
requiring a person to do degrading, risky or illegal acts in order to join a group
What is cyber bullying?
the use of e-mail, instant messaging or text messages to make threats or spread rumors
What is prejudice?
negative feelings about a group based on stereotypes
What is harassment?
unwanted remarks or actions that cause emotional or physical pain
What is intolerance?
a lack of acceptance of another person’s opinions, beliefs or actions
What is bullying?
the use of threats or physical force to intimidate and control another person
What is a stereotype?
an exaggerated belief or overgeneralization about an entire group of people
