Chapter 7/8 Flashcards
Cation
An ion that has a positive charge
Chemical bond
The force that holds two atoms together; may form by the attraction of a positive ion for a negative ion or by sharing electrons
Covalent bond
A chemical bond that results from the sharing of valence electrons
Crystal lattice
A 3-D geometric arrangement of particles in which each positive ion is surrounded by negative ions that are surrounded by positive ions
Formula unit
The simplest ratio of ions represented in an ionic compound
Ionic bond
The electrostatic force that holds oppositely charged particles together in an ionic compound
Ionic compound
Compounds that contain ionic bonds
Lattice energy
Energy required to separate one mile of the ions of an ionic compound, which is directly related to the size of the ions bonded and is also affected by the charge of the ions
Lewis structure
A model that uses electron-dot structures to show how electrons are arranged in molecules
Molecule
Forms when two or more atoms covalently bond and is lower in potential energy than its constituent atoms
Oxidation number
The positive or negative charge of a monatomic ion
Polar covalent bond
A type of bond that forms when electrons are not shared equally
Polyatomic ion
An ion made up of two or more atoms bonded together that acts as a single unit with a net charge
Structural formal
A molecular model that uses symbols and bonds to show relative positions of atoms
Anion
An ion that has a negative charge
