Chapter 14 Vocab Flashcards
Colloid
A heterogeneous mix of intermediate sized particles
Concentration
A measure of how much solute is dissolved in a specific amount of solvent or solution
Crystallization
A separation technique that produces pure solid particles of a substance from a solution that contains the dissolved substance
Brownian motion
Erratic, random, moments of colloid particles that results from collisions of particles of the dispersion medium with the dispersed particles
Distillation
A technique that can be used to physically separate most homogeneous mixtures based on the differences in the boiling points of the substances
Filtration
A technique that uses a porous barrier to separate a solid from a liquid
Heterogeneous mixture
One that does not have a uniform composition and in which the individual substances remain distinct
Homogeneous mixture
One that has a uniform composition throughout and always has a single phase
Insoluble
Describes a substance that cannot be dissolved in a given solvent
Mixture
A physical blend of two or more pure substances in any proportion in which each substance retains its individual properties
Molarity
The number of miles of solute dissolved per liter of solution
Saturated solution
Contains the maximum amount of dissolved solute for a given amount of solvent at a specific temperature and pressure
Soluble
Describes a substance that can be dissolved in a given solvent
Solution
A uniform mixture that can contain solids liquids or gases
Solvation
The process of surrounding solute particles with solvent particles to form a solution
