Consists of a group of interacting individuals related by blood, marriage, cohabitation, or adoption who interdependently perform relevant functions by fulfilling expected roles. Relevant family functions include practices and values placed on health

A
Patterns of living among individuals in family system. Family has a unique culture, value system, and history: can be influence by individual behaviors and responses

- lifestyle (overeating, drug dependency)
- genetics
- environmental (stress, pollution)
- social, psychological, cultural, spiritual (crowding, isolation)
- healthcare system (overuse, lack of access)

What are the 8 stages of family development?
A
- Couple: adapting to role expectations of a partner; leaving the “I” stage and entering the “We” stage; decisions on employment, $, social work, household tasks; need to negotiate conflict management
- Childbearing: explore ways to meet each other’s needs and work together, support needed in new roles as parents; risks of STDs and pregnacy, inc stress; influenced by family origin
- Family w/ Toddlers: need to balance home safety w/ child exploration; include child in activities to promote learning/ teach health behaviors thru modeling; parents need time together as couples
- Family w/ school age kids: parent conflict b/w self-interest & self-fulfillment in producing next generation; preparing to expand kid’s world; teach health risks and benefits of health behaviors; task of “letting go”
- Family w/ Adolescents: loosen family ties; promote identity formation/ responsibility; balance freedom and responsibility; develop lifestyle choices include consequences
- Family w/ Young Adult: parents return to marital dyad; coping w/ social/ occupational pressures, maintain health habits, aging
- Family w/ Middle Age Adult: empty nest; risk factors related to heart disease, cancer, stroke; alter lifestyle choices to reduce risk
- Family w/ Older Adults: retirement/ dec income; adjusting to living standards; assuring safe comfortable home & preparing for death; adjusting to loss of spouse; health promotion to maintain func and quality of life

What is the difference b/w a Genogram and a Ecomap?
A
- Genogram is a diagram that identifies family health patterns and highlights membership and structure; looks like a family tree
- Ecomap is a diagram that shows family organizational patterns and demonstrates characteristics of relationships b/w family members
