Chapter 7 Flashcards
positive ETT
Ischemia of cardiac musclee
Age predicted Max HR formula
220 - age
VO2 Max
Max amount of O2 consumed per minute when the individual has reached max effort
MET
Amount of oxygen consumed at rest per unit of body weight for 1 minute
light intensity METs
<3 METs
Sitting, standing, self-care, making the bed, food shopping, walking <2.5mph
moderate intensity METs
3-6 METs
Walking downstairs, walking 2.5mph - <4.0mph, mowing lawn with walking power mower, playing golf
vigorous intensity METs
6.0 - 8.8 METs
Walking faster than 4.5mph, swimming laps at moderate effort, jogging, running at 5.0mph, shoveling snow
Exercise guidelines for elderly
30 min of moderate intensity activity, 5 days/week
Importance of warmup
Goal: increase HR to within 20bpm of target range
- Increase muscle temp
- Dilate capillaries
- Increase adaptation in neural respiratory center
- Increase venous return
- Increase flexibility
Importance of cool down
- Prevent venous pooling
- Prevent fainting
- Prevent cardiovascular complications
- Enhance recovery period by oxidation of metabolic waste and replacement of energy stores
