Define Hierarchy
The number of levels in a organisational structure
Define chain of command
The route through which authority is passed down through an organisation.
Define delegation
Passing authority down through the organisational structure to a subordinate.
Define subordinate
An employee who is below another employee in the organisational structure.
Define span of control
The number of subordinates reporting to each manager or supervisor.
Define delayering
Removing one or more levels in an organisational structure, most often middle management
Define centralised organisation
One where all the important decision making is held at the Head Office, or the centre
Define decentralised organisation
One where all the decision making power is passed down the organisation to lower levels.
What are the advantages of delegation?
- Managers have more time to focus on more complex task
- Motivate employees as they are being trusted and develop skills
- Better chance of promotion (employees)
- Quality of work will improve (benefit for business
What are the disadvantages of delegation?
- Managers feel threatened, if workers are better then managers
- Subordinates might not have skills, lack of training
- Fear of losing control of subordinates
Define autocratic leadership
A leadership style where the leader makes all the decisions
Define democratic leadership
A leadership style where the employees take part in the decision making
Define laissez-faire leadership
A leadership style where most of the decisions are left to the employees
What are the advantages and disadvantages of autocratic leadership?
Advantages
- decision making is faster
Diadvantages
- worker’s motivation are low
- need more supervision
What are the advantages and disadvantages of democratic leadership?
Advantages
- motivate workers, trusted by leader and decision is respected
- worker complete task with no supervision
Disadvantages
- Decision making is slowest
