Diagnosed through a combo of:
- looking at IQ scores
- evaluating behavior
- onset of condition
Characteristics of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
-Severe, chronic disability
Attributable to mental or physical impairment
-is likely to manifest prior to age 22
-is likely to continue indefinitely- NO CURES
-results in substantial limitation in 3 or more of the following: self-care, receptive & expressive language, learning, mobility, self-direction, capacity for independent living, economic self-sufficiency

Characteristics of Mental Illness
-broad range of illnesses, diseases, impairments or symptoms thought to be a resulf of:
–abnormal brain function
–environmental stress
–a combination of these and other factors

ABOUT 5% OF AMERICANS HAVE SERIOUS MENTAL ILLNESS
