Mission & Philosophy
To create accessible programs, an agency needs to develop an inclusive mission and philosophy
-a commitment must be made to serve everyone, regardless or ability
Mission Statement
Expression of inclusion philosophy
A “statement of purpose” for an agency
Reflects vision & values that direct an agency
Empowers it to achieve objectives
Steps for Completing a plan for Facility Accessibility
1) . Identify facilities youre responsible for
2) . Survey facilities identified
3) . Compare results w/ appropriate standard for accessibility
4) . Determine if any structural barriers exist
5) . Develop solutions to overcome barriers
6) . Develop an access plan
7) . Identify solutions and barriers not proposed to be implemented b/c they aren’t “readily achievable”
8) . Retain a copy of the accessibility plan on file and monitor its implementation
Direct Threat to Self or Others
Decisions based on direct threat to self or to others must be based on actual, demonstrable evidence
7 Steps to Assist in Developing a Safe Program
1) . Thorough program planning with documents
2) . Appropriate numbers of qualified staff members
3) . Activity and location must be appropriate for participants and their skill levels
4) . Develop a sense of community and an atmosphere of self-responsibility
5) . Inform participants of potential risks; be sure they understand the risks to encourage self-responsibility
6) . Effective supervision
7) . Staff members must exercise good judgment in using facilities and program components
Service Animal Definition
A service animal is a DOG that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability
Tasks a Service an Animal Can Do
Guilding people who are blind
Alerting people who are deaf
Pulling a wheelchair
Calming a person with PTSD during an anxiety attack
Service Animals Accessibility
- Are allowed pretty much everywhere
- “no dogs/pets” restrictions don’t apply to service apply
- policies and procedures must be modified to accommodate service animals
- can’t be an extra charge for service animals
- people who use service animals can’t be isolated from other patrons
- Businesses can’t charge “pet deposits” for service animals
Inquiries
- limited inquiries when its obvious the individual with a disability is using a service dog
- Staff may ask: is the dog a service animal?
- –what task is the dog trained to perform?
