Chapter 6 - White blood cell disorders Flashcards
What is a normal blood cell count?
5 - 10 K/µL
What are the two main causes of Neutropenia?
1. Drug toxicity
2. Severe Infection
- Aplastic anemia
- SLE
- Radiation
What are the four main causes of Lymphocytopenia?
1. Immunodeficency (DiGeorge, HIV)
2. High cortisol state (Corticosteroid, chusings)
3. Autoimmune destruction (SLE)
4. Whole body radiation
WHat are the two main causes of neutrophilic leukocytosis?
1. Bacterial infection or tissue necrossis
2. High cortisol state
What are the two main causes of monocytosis?
1. Chronic inflammatory states
2. Malignancy
What are the three main causes of eosinophilia?
1. Allergic reactions
2. Parasitic infection
3. Hodgkin lymphoma
Which disorder is clasically associated with basophilia?
Chronic Myeloid Leukemia
What are the two main causes of lymphocytic leukocytosis?
1. Viral infection
2. Bordatella pertussis
Case: 16 year old male presents with pharyngitis with generalized lymphadenopathy and hepatosplenomegally. You perform a cross reaction test with horse and sheep blood which is positive.
Which pathogen may have caused the sympoms, but have been excluded by the cross reaction test?
Infectious mononucleosis
EBV infection results in lymphocytic leukocytosis, it can also be caused by CMV virus. A postive monospot test (cross reaction test) rules out CMV.
Case: HIV patient develops B-cell lymphoma. The past medical history indicates a previous B-cell infection which may have caused it. What else can the dormant B-cell virus in question cause?
EBV
Recurrent Infectious mononucleosis.
