Chapter 6 Test Study Guide Flashcards
What is matter?
matter is anything that thaw mass or takes up space
What are the 3 main particle models?
- tiny particles to small to see
- constant motion
- different sizes and properties
What role does motion play in the Particle Model of Matter?
It determines the form of a substance
What role does packing of particles play in the Particle of Model of Matter?
Constant motion. Liquid moves faster than a solid.
What is a colloid?
Two phases of matter trapped within each other.
Aerosol - Liquid trapped within a gas
What are the 12 properties of matter?
- mass 2. volume 3. density 4. color 5. texture 6. odor
7. luster 8. transparency 9. hardness 10. resistance to breakage 11. solubility 12. conductivity
What is solubility?
The ability to dissolve.
What is conductivity?
The ability to conduct electricity.
What is transparency?
How well light goes through something.
What is luster?
The ability to ref.
What is resistance to breakage?
Resistance is how hard it is to breakthrough an object.
What is hardness?
How hard it is to scratch an object.
What is a phase change?
A change in a substance’s physical properties but not its chemical identity.
What are the 4 phases of matter?
solid-has a definite shape and volume
liquid-has no definite shape but definite volume
gas-has no definite shape or volume
plasma-is created in unique conditions and is created at very high temperatures
What is the difference between a crystalline solid and an amorphous solid?
Crystalline is most solid, regular repeating of molecules.
Amorphous solids less regular arrangements, melt at relatively low temperatures. (wax)
What are the 3 basic forms of carbon? Why are they different?
Compact structure.
Fluid structure.
random structure.
What is viscosity?
Viscosity is the resistance to flow.
What is condensation?
Condensation is when gas (vapor) turns into a liquid gas to liquid.
What is evaporation?
liquid to gas.
What is Boyle’s Law?
At constant temperature, when pressure increases volume decreases.
What is Charles’ Law?
Robert Boyle-1600s English Scientist.
At constant temperature, when pressure increases, volume decreases.
How can you compare the graphs of Boyle’s law and Charles’ Law?
……..see graphs…….
What is physical change?
A change in a substances physical properties but not its chemical identity.
What is a mixture?
Two substances combined/put together.
