Chapter 6 - States of Matter Flashcards
What is Volume?
The amount of space taken up by an object or substance.
What is Mass?
Amount of particles in an object. (Grams or Kilograms)
What is a Solid?
Fixed shape and volume.
What is a liquid?
Fixed volume, but no fixed shape.
What is a gas?
No fixed shape or volume.
What is diffusion?
Spreading of one substance through another, due to the movement of their particles. E.g. Iodine.
What is matter?
Anything that has mass or volume.
Melting Point?
Temperature at which a solid turns into a liquid (melt) or a liquid turns into a solid (freeze)
Boiling Point?
Temperature liquid changes to a gas.
Sublimation?
Gas to Solid or Solid to a Gas. Missing Liquid.
Melting?
Solid to Liquid. Heat transferred.
Evaporating?
Liquid to gas. Below 100 - Water Vapour. Above 100 - Steam.
Freezing?
Liquid to Solid. Heat taken away.
Condensation?
Gas with a cold surface turns into a liquid.
Boiling?
Liquid to Gas.
