Chapter 6 Sensation N Perception Flashcards
What is Sensation?
Its when sensory receptors and nervous system receive stimulus from the environment
What is Perception
The Process of interpreting sensory information allowing us to recognize meaningful objects and events
What is Transduction
Transduction is the process of converting one form of energy into another that our brain can use.
- Receive sensory stimulation
- Transform that information into neural impulses
- Deliver the neural information to our brain
What is Absolute Threshold
The minimum stimulation needed to detect a stimulus 50% of the time
What is Signal Detection theory
Predicts how and when a faint stimulus will become detectable
What is subluminal messaging
Input below the absolute threshold for conscious awareness
What is Difference Threshold
Minimum difference a person t can detect between any two stimuli and perceive them as different (Think Webers law)
What is Webr Law
The minimum difference between two stimuli to detect as different
What is Sensory Adaptation
Diminished sensitivity as a consequence to constant stimulation. Related to habituation
What is Perception Set
Think blocking out certain stimuli
Mental tendency that effect (top down) what we hear, feel, see, and think
What Helps Determine Our Perception Set
Culture, beliefs, previous experiences, and emotions
How Does Context Affect Our Perception
Think A13C or 12 13 14 example
