Chapter 3 Consciousness Flashcards
What is Consciousness/ what is cognitive neuroscience
Awareness of the self and the environment
Cognitive neuroscience: Explore and map conscious cortex functions
What is Selective attention
Focusing conscious awareness on a particular stimulus
What is Change Blindness
Failure to notice change in the environment, a form of inattentional blindness
What is Duel processing
Information is simultaneously processed on separate tracks:
Unconscious, faster and automatic
conscious, slower and deliberate
What is Blindsight
Damage to the primary visual cortex, however can still navigate around objects without seeing them
What is the Circadian rhythm
Internal biological clock of 24 hour day and night cycle
What are hypnagogic sensations and when do they occur
Occur during the transition of wakefulness and Rem sleep, can give false sensations from stimuli that is not present (i,g falling, spinning, suffocation
Why do we sleep?
protective role in human evolution
restores and recuperates immune system
Strengthens neurol connections that build memories
Promotes creative problem solving
What happens if we don’t get any sleep
We accumulate a sleep debt
Become more prone to anger and conflict
Weakens immune system and muscle repair and growth
Briefly summarize the following sleeping disorders
Insomnia
Narcolepsy
Sleep Apnea
Night Terrors
Insomnia: unable to fall asleep
Narcolepsy: Sudden uncontrollable sleep attacks, sometimes lapsing directly into REM
Sleep Apnea: A stoppage of breathing while sleeping, common in obese men
Night Terrors: High arousal and appearance of being terrified
what is substance use disorder
Characterized as continued drug craving despite significant life/psychical harm
What are examples of Depressants
alcohol, barbituates, optiates
What are examples of Stimulants
nicotine, cocaine,
methamphetamine, and ectasy
What are example of Hallucinogens
LSD, marijuana
Define the stages of Sleep: Awake state Relaxed state N1 N2 N3 Deep sleep
Bata waves: wake state
Alpha waves: Relatively slow brain waves of a relaxed,
N1: Hypnagogic Sensations
N2: periodic sleep spindles; easy to arouse
Delta waves(N3): Large, slow brain waves associated with deep sleep
