Chapter 6, Section 3 Flashcards
Electricity
Vocabulary
What is a series circuit?
An electric circuit with only one branch
When any part of a series circuit is disconnected, there is no current through the circuit
Vocabulary
What is a parallel circuit?
An electric circuit with more than one branch
Devices on each branch can be turned on or off seperately
Question
What is the equation for electrical power?
P = IV
Power (W) = Current (A) * Voltage Difference (V)
Vocabulary
What is electrical power?
The rate at which electrical energy is converted to another form of energy
Question
What is the equation for electrical energy?
E = pt
Electrical Energy (kWh) = Electrical Power (kW) * Time (h)
Question
What are examples of safety devices that prevent circuits from overheating?
Fuses- Contain a small piece of metal on the interior that melts if the current becomes too high. This causes a break in the current and stops it.
Circuit Breakers- When the current becomes too great, a switch flips and opens, which stops the current.
