Chapter 6, Section 2 Flashcards
Electricity
Vocabulary
What is electric current?
The net movement of electric charges in a single direction
Measured in Amperes
Vocabulary
What is a voltage difference?
It is related to the force that causes electric charges to flow
Measured in volts
Vocabulary
What is an electric circuit?
A closed path that electric current follows
Vocabulary
What is resistance?
A tendency of a material to resist the flow of electrons and to convert electrical energy into other forms of energy, such as thermal energy
Measured in Ohms
Vocabulary
What is Ohm’s Law?
It states that the current in an electric circuit equals the voltage difference divided by the resistance
Question
Is there positive flow in a current?
No. Because current flows in the direction of positive charge, it is actually negatively charged electrons moving through the circuit.
Electrons in a circuit also move from lower voltage to higher voltage.
Question
What is the difference between wet and dry-cell batteries?
Wet-Cell: conducting liquid solution, used in automobiles
Dry-Cell: conducting paste, used in household objects
Questiong
What is the voltage difference of outlets?
Most household objects plug into 120 V outlets, but appliances and other large-scale tools use 240 V outlets.
Question
What is the Ohm’s Law (current) equation?
I = V/R
Current (A) = Voltage Difference (V) / Resistance (Ohms)
Question
What are AC and DC and what are their differences?
AC flows out of outlets and direct currents are used in batteries.
An example of an AC/DC adapter is a charging block.
