Chapter 6 - Plants Flashcards
What are the 4 main processes glucose is used for/ turned into in plants? Can you name these in order of the quickest to the slowest process?
Respiration, storage, cellulose, minerals
What do plants need respiration for?
Respiration - to respire and release energy, glucose is made for this process
What is do plants need storage for?
Storage - some glucose is converted into starch or oil which is stored and can be converted back into glucose when needed
What do plants need minerals for?
Minerals - some glucose combines with minerals to make new chemical substances (e.g. glucose and nitrogen form nitrates needed for growth, magnesium makes chlorophyll)
What do plants need cellulose for?
Cellulose - storage form of glucose but can’t be turned back into glucose, instead is used to make chemical substances and cell walls and new bits of the plant
What is the word photosynthesis equation? What about the actual, element, equation?
Carbon dioxide + water —(sunlight and chlorophyll)—> glucose + oxygen
6CO(2) + 6H(2)O —> C(6)H(12)O(6) + 6O(2)
Name some plant chemicals we use for medicine
Digoxin(chemical found in foxgloves, slows down heart rate, can kill if not used properly), Quinine(produced by chichona trees, treats malaria) , Aspirin(produced by willow trees, treats symptoms such as pain and fever)
Who showed that microorganisms were responsible for disease?
Louis Pasteur
