Chapter 6 Peripheral Nervous System Afferent Flashcards
Autonomic Nervous System & Somatic
What does the CNS do?
Communicate with the CNS
What are the 2 means of Communication?
Nervous System and Endocrine System
Both the Nervous System and Endocrine System use
Chemical Messengers
Describe the Neuron
Uses Neurotransmitters
Neuron has short distance (synaptic cleft)
-Fast on/off
-Specific location and localized effect
Describe the Endocrine System
Uses hormones
- endocrine glands release hormones into blood targets tissues throughout the body
- slow effect: Slow on and slow off
- Prolonged effect **HORMONE
- Has GLOBAL EFFECT-goes everywhere (all tissues with that receptor)
What does the CNS consist of Anatomically?
- Brain with 12 pairs of cranial nerves
- Spinal Cord with 31 pairs of spinal nerves
What nerves make up the Peripheral Nervous System?
21 pairs of spinal nerves=peripheral nervous system
What nerves make up the Peripheral Nervous System?
21 pairs of spinal nerves=peripheral nervous system
What are the 2 PNS Pathways?
Afferent and efferent
Afferent PNS pathway consists of
Sensory-info consciously aware of senses
Visceral-from internal structures not consciously aware of
Efferent Pathway Consists of?
Somatic Nervous System and Autonomic Nervous System
What is the Sensory/Afferent?
Senses from the environment that reaches the level of conscious awareness
Viscera Afferent?
-Sensory information we are unaware of, from the internal viscera (organs in the body cavities) Ex: Blood pressure and the concentraion of CO2 in the body fluids
Efferent Motor Somatic
Controls skeletal muscles
Efferent Motor Autonomic
controls smooth and cardiac muscle and glands
