Obsession

Presence of obsession
- Recurrent and persistent thoughts, urges, or images that are intrusive and unwanted, and cause marked anxiety
- Ignores thoughts, urges, images, or to neutralize them with some other thought or action
Presence of Compulsion
- Repetitive behaviour, or mental acts in response to an obsession
- Preventing or reducing anxiety or distress, or preventing some dreaded event or situation (excessive)

- Intrusive quality
- Unacceptability
- Subjective resistance
- Ego-dysonicity
Intrusive quality
Thought, image, or impulse enters consciousness in an unintended manner
Unacceptability
negative affect associated with the intrusion may vary from an annoyance to unpleasantness or distress to overwhelming fear
Subjective Resistance
suppress, dismiss, or prevent the obsession from entering consciousness
Uncontrollability
diminished control over the obsession
Ego-dystonicity
nonsensical, meaningless mental phenomena that have minimal implications to the self, to ideas, images, or impulses that are entirely inconsistent
