Q

Why does the resultant force of a uniform circular motion act towards the centre?

A
  • A body moving a constant speed will constantly undergo a constant change in direction, indicating a change in velocity and tangential acceleration
  • To maintain uniform speed, the acceleration is radially directed (perpendicular to the direction of motion) to not cause a change in speed
  • By Newton’s 2nd Law, there is a net force acting towards the centre of the circle to provide this acceleration
