- What is leadership?
The ability to influence other people to go in a particular direction and achieve a particular goal.
What is corporate (or organisation) culture?
The general atmosphere and patterns of behaviour within a workplace.
What is delegation?
Giving authority for the carrying out of tasks to others.
- What are the different types of leader?
What is an autocratic leader?
Do not like sharing their authority with subordinates but prefer to make most of the decisions themselves.
What is a democratic leader?
Leaders willing to discuss issues with staff and to delegate power and responsibility where necessary.
What is a laissez-faire leader?
Involves giving staff general goals and targets to aim for and them giving them the authority to achieve these in whatever way they think best.
- What is motivation?
The willingness of people to work hard and to contribute their best effort.
What effects on a business does motivation have?
Increased productivity Greater intrapreneurship Improved industrial relations Easier staff recruitment and detentions Repeat business.
- What is Maslow’s theory of motivation?
Says that all human needs can be arranged in a hierarchy (or pyramid) in order of their importance.
What are the levels of the pyramid (bottom-top)?
Physical Safety Social Esteem Self actualisation.
- What is McGregor’s theory of motivation?
Focuses on managers attitudes to staff. They either have a theory X or Y attitude.
What are theory X managers?
Have an negative view that people dislike work and must be forced to do it.
What are theory Y managers?
Have a positive view that people, given the right cinditions, can work hard and enjoy it.
