Coordinating an organizations resources to achieve the goal of an organization
Planning
1) Set major goals and objectives
2) Develop plans to accomplish these goals and objectives
Goal
Result that an orginization is expected to achieve over a one-to-ten year period
Objective
What an organization. Intends to accomplish over a shorter period of time(one year)
Mission statement
The basic purpose that makes an organization different from others(first step in planning process)
S.W.O.T
Identify and evaluate a companies strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
S,W -> Internal
O,T -> External
Strategic plan
Broad plan (ex, go green)
Tactical plan
Smaller scale (ex. recycle)
Operational plan
Implements tactical (ex. Put recycle bins on each floor)
Contingency plan
“Plan B” Alternative if other plans fail or are disputed
Leading
Influencing people to work towards a common goal
Motivating
Providing reasons for people to work in the best interested or an organization (make people want to do their job)
Autocratic leadership style
Workers are told what to do and how to do it
Participative/Collaborative
All members of a team are involved in identifying essential goals and developing strategies
Controlling
Evaluating ongoing activities to make sure that goals are achieved
Conceptual Skills
Think in abstract terms
Interpersonal skills
Deal effectively with other people
Technical skills
Accomplish specialized activity
Communication skills
Speak, listen and write effectively
Top managers
Guides overall structure - does strategic planning (conceptual skill)
Middle managers
Implements major policies developed by top managers - does tactical planning (interpersonal skills)

Supervises the activities of operating employees - does operational plan (technical skill)
