Q

What is theory?

A

Theory is the systematic explanation of some phenomena, based on evidence. Theory specifies “relationships among concepts and actions and suggests under what conditions something might happen”

In other words, theories are often used to describe or explain relationships between two or more things or explain how and under what circumstances they are linked

Kelly 1987 suggested that regardless of whether it is developed to understand some phenomena better or to guide decision making, theory is:

A
  • an act of explanation that is communicated to others
  • systematic, with presuppositions and evidence (observation/measurement)
  • always subject to question and criticism
  • selective and partial

Q

Where do leisure theories come from?

A

Several social science disciplines have influenced the development or application of theory in leisure studies.

Mannell and Klieber suggested that social science theories can help leisure researchers and practitioners:

  • address problems that affect the health and well being (risks and benefits) of individuals, families, groups, communities, and society.
  • understand the choices people make about leisure and how they affect and are affected by other aspects of life
  • understand more about what people do and experience in their leisure and the factors hat affect this
