definition of leisure (loosely defined)

A

any activity or experience that is a) freely chosen, b) intrinsically motivated (done for its own sake), c) provides the opportunity to use our own particular skills in interesting ways

engaging in leisure activities can have a variety of positive outcomes ranging from enhanced moods to feelings of accomplishment and mastery. All are related to what we would call satisfaction or enjoyment.

Those who tend to participate in leisure tend to report greater life satisfaction

Leisure interacts with identity development because:

A

leisure plays a key role in helping individuals develop their own sense of self. it does so by offering the freedom to explore, experiment with, or “try on” different roles.

Like a stage in a play, leisure offers the opportunity to “present” ourselves to others and gauge their reaction on our successes and failures, through this process individuals identities emerge.
