Chapter 6 - Inside The Atom Flashcards
Nucleus
Central part of the atom, made up of protons and neutrons
Protons
Positively charged particles found in the nucleus of an atom
Neutrons
Particles that are found in the nucleus of an atom. They have no charge
Electrons
Negatively charged particles that orbit the nucleus of an atom
Isotope
Atoms of the same element that have a different number of neutrons in the nucleus
Stable
An atom who’s nucleus is held strongly together
Unstable
An atom where the nucleus is not held together well
Radioisotopes
A radioactive isotope
Nuclear radiation
Radiotion from the nucleus of an atom, made up of alpha particles, beta particles or gamma rays
Alpha particles
Positively charged helium nuclei
Beta particles
Either negatively or positively charged particles with the same size and mass of an electron
Gamma rays
High energy electromagnetic radiation produced during a nuclear reaction
Half-Life
Time taken for half of the radioactive atoms in a sample to decay
Cosmic radiation
Naturally occurring radiation found in outer space
