Chapter 6 - Forces in Action Flashcards
What is the centre of mass?
The point where the mass is thought to be most concentrated
What happens to the centre of mass when an object is suspended?
It is directly beneath the point of suspension
Where is the centre of mass of a symmetrical object?
Along the line of symmetry
What does the time period of a pendulum depend on?
The length
How do you measure the time period of a pendulum?
Measure time for 20 osc/ 20
What does the amplitude of the oscillating object depend on?
The distance it moves from equilibrium to its highest position
What is the moment of a force?
A measure of the turning effect of the force of an object
How can you increase the moment of a force?
Increasing the force or perpendicular distance
What is the weight of an object called?
Load
What is a level used for?
To act as a force multiplier
If an object is at rest, what happens to the moments?
The sum of anticlockwise moments = sum of clockwise moments about a point
What does W1 d1 equal to?
W2 d2
How can you increase stability?
Increasing base and making the centre of mass lower
Why does an object topple over? (2 ways)
- If the line of action of its weight is outside the base
- If resultant moment about its point of turning isn’t 0
Why does the velocity of an object moving in a circle at a constant speed keep changing?
The object’s direction is continually changing
