Chapter 6 | Electricity Flashcards
What do watts measure?
power
What do volts measure?
electric potential
What do Amperes measure?
current
What do kilowatt-hours measure?
energy
What is the advantage of three-phase current over single phase?
Smaller
More efficient motors
No starters
What are the advantages of direct current over alternating current?
Smooth change in voltage
What are the advantages of alternating current over direct current?
More efficient stepping up and down of voltage so it can be more efficiently sent over long distances
How would a piece of equipment be labeled if it required 120 volts to run the controls and 240 volts to power a heating element?
120/240
What is a power factor and what would cause it to be less than one?
A measure of how much your volts and amps are out of phase
List the (6) components of an electrical service system and their purpose
- Energy supply
- Meter
- Service switch
- Transformer (steps up/down voltage)
- Distribution panel (distribute electricity)
- Circuit panel
What are the two types of electrical circuit configuration?
Parallel
Series
What is the primary circuit configuration used to connect electrical appliances?
Parallel
Which circuit configuration would be used to connect an electrical protection device to the equipment it is protecting?
Fuse or circuit breaker
What is a ground-fault circuit interrupter?
Measures the current in the black and white wires. Prevents electrocution by shutting down when it detects the current is different. It is found by water (sinks/tubs)
What is a time-delayed fuse?
Only used for motors because of the overload needed for them to start. It is two fuses in one.
