Chapter 6: Easy Wayfinding Flashcards
How do people learn how to use a space?
Through useful patterns (conventions and expirece )
Why is useful way finding important for websites?
Users only have a small window into the site.
How will the get to the functions, features and content they need
What two components make up wayfinding?
Navigation (features that move user around a site) and Orientation (Identify the current location)
Works well visually but also for assistive technologies
With helpful way finding…
People can navigate a site, feature or page by using the self explanatory signposts
Navigation Options Make sense
The interface supports exploration
People Know where they are
How can we design helpful way finding?
Create consistent cues for orientation and navigation
Present things that are the same in the same way
Differentiate things that are different
Provide orientation clues
Provide clear landmarks within the page
Provide alternative ways to navigate
What do some AT present a page
Linearly so content comes first. You don’t get to see bits and pieces it’s a linear process you go past certain posts
Labelling
Be consistent with names for things
Location of labels - put in same place
Forms - labels before input fields
Rules for links
Link text accurately communicates what link will do (destination or action)
Text of link and title of target page should be similar
How can we provide orientation clues
Identify the site Title the page (used in bookmarks - first thing read by screen readers) a good convention : page name -section name - site Provide Good Headings Start with an overview Highlight the current location Avoid using visual only cues Use multiple cues
How can we code navigation?
HTML5 semantic elements and ARIA roles. Create clear landmarks that AT can use
