Chapter 1: A Web for Everyone Flashcards
What’s the aim of the book?
That people have diverse abilities and contexts that they use the web in. They can use the webs successfully and enjoyably.
What do we mean by design?
Design is a broad ranging discipline. It’s about making decisions about how something should work.
What is usability?
Usability come back to two questions:
Does the product do the job it’s supposed to?
Does it do what it needs to efficiently and effectively?
What is accessibility?
How easily and effectively can a product or service can be used.
What do we mean by disability?
ability + barrier = disability
If someone has the ability to use a product, and then through our decisions we put in place a barrier to them using the resource, we create disability.
What do we mean by inclusive design?
design + accessibility = inclusive design
Inclusive design is also known as human centred design or universal design.
This approach places user needs first in design decisions and includes a wide range of human abilities.
What are the principles of inclusive design
People First: Designing for Differences Clear Purpose: Well Defined Goals Solid Structure: Built to Standards Easy Interaction: Everything Works Helpful Wayfinding: Guides Users Clean Presentation: Supports Meaning Plain Language: Creates a Conversation Accessible Media: Supports all Senses Universal Usability: Creates Delight
What three concepts make up inclusive design
Web Content Accessibilty Guidelines
Universal Design Principles
Design Thinking
Tim Bernes Lee on accessibility
“The power of the web is in its universality. Access by everyone regardless of disability is an essential part”
What is WAI?
Web Accessibility Initiative. The part of the World Wide Web Consortium that focuses on Accessibility Guidelines
The most notable guidelines are:
WCAG 2.0 (We Content Accessibility Guidelines)
WAI-ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications)
What are Web Content Accessibility Principles?
Periceivable - Content can be seen or heard
Operable - Assistive Technology can interact with the User Interface effectively
Understanadable - Content communicates clearly
Robust - User Interface is reliable
Ron Mace on universal design
“Universal design is the design of products and environments to be usable by all people to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialised design”
Is there such a thing as the average user?
No. Variance among humans is normal.
What are the principles of Universal design
Equitable use Flexibility of use Simple intuitive use Perceptiable information Tolerance for error Low physical effort Size and space for approach and use
What is design thinking?
Design thinking places human needs over product needs. The term was coined by Tim Brown from IDEO. Thinking like a designer can transform the way you develop products, services, processes - even strategy.
